The Malacca State Government’s initial proposal was to name it the Tunku Abdul Rahman Memorial, but it was changed to the Declaration of Independence Memorial. This change coincides with an important event which is the date of Independence of the Federation of Malaya on 31 August 1957, which was declared by the first Prime Minister of Malaysia, YTM Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj at Padang Pahlawan, Bandar Hilir on 20 February 1956.
